Music Magazine-Analysis.

Q magazineI wanted to reasearch into the postioning of the layout in music magazines.This is the final shot of the Q  photoshoot. What I like about this is the cool colour scheme, which gives the whole appearence of the magazine a classic edge.I also love the light pink text which gives a contrast between the industrial scene in the background.

Theory homework

Hawkins, a sequences of Shots.

The video starts with a close up of Hawkins, we notice that the camera is at a angle and the framing is messy, giving the impression Hawkins is confused and disorientated.The  curtains opens and the light falls on Hawkins face which highlights his realisation of his surroundings.

It carrys on to show Hawkins surroundings using a high angle shot of the hospital.This helps the audience establish where Hawkins is but also gives the audience the impression that hawkins feels isolated.It then goes to a two-shot, of Hawkins and a nurse,but she walks out of the frame quickly which makes Hawkins look vunerable and alone.

Hawkins spots a doctor and asks what his diagnosis is, we get an edgy, and panicked view of this scene, this is done by using a handheld camera, so the shots are rough, this highlights Hawkins confusion.As the scene progresses, the camera follows the two men with an unstable frame. As the doctor is explaining, light is  exposed onto Hawkins face, which gives us the feeling g Hawkins understanding. As they carry on walking, the light disappears so Hawkins face is in the dark this gives the auidence the impression of despair.

Finally, all the way through this sequence of shots, Hawkins is wearing his glasses, this creates a reflection of what Hawkins is looking at.This technique shows us Hawkins confused experience.

Vladimir Propp-

  • “His character types are used in media education and can be applied to almost any story, be it in literature, theatre, film, television series, etc.”
  • He created a list of Character types which are always used to define a role in the story.
  • The villain — struggles against the hero.
  • The donor — prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.
  • The (magical) helper — helps the hero in the quest.
  • The princess and her father — gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father can not be clearly distinguished.
  • The dispatcher — character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.
  • The hero or victim/seeker hero — reacts to the donor, weds the princess.
  • [False hero] — takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.
  • Tzvetan Todrov-
  • An analysis of the narrative structure can give us clues as to the film’s “preferred reading”, (what message it is trying to convey).Todrov suggested that conventional narratives are structured in five stages:
  • a state of equilibrium at the outset;
  • a disruption of the equilibrium by some action;
  • a recognition that there has been a disruption;
  • an attempt to repair the disruption;
  • a reinstatement of the equilibrium

The Grind Magazine-aimed at Students

A  Magazine cover aimed at young adults
This is my finished Magazine Cover for students.I chose to use one of my friends who is my age,so instantly the reader will assume the magazine is aimed at a younger audience.
Firstly, using photoshop, I cropped the photo and used the Magic wand tool to select the pieces of the photo I wanted.Then I smoothed out some rough edges (a result of using the magic wand tool) of the photograph by using the smudge tool. I decided that the photograph was too bright and colourful, a photograph of one colour would give a cool, simple edge to the magazine. I did this by adjusting the Hue and Brightness and matching the background to the new colour of the photograph.
After placing the photograph in the correct place, I added text. I wanted to achive a Fashion Magazine layout, so i looked for this on the internet.
I used a official school magazine( in the link list ) this as a template, to give me a guide when adding a title and text.

Taking on board Mr Gould’s comments, I changed the colour of the cover, to highlight that this is an Autumn issue.I also moved around the texts so the cover did not look as crowded as it previously did.Finally I changed the text from an “outer glow” to a drop shadow so that the text was easier to read against a warmer background.This is my final piece.

Magazine cover aimed at Parents and Perspective Students

Chosen Hill School MagazineAfter looking at some examples of school magazine aimed at parents(in my links), Idecided to go for a simple layout and basic colours, so the cover wouldn’t look unprofessional by being overcrowded.

Firstly I edited the photography buy cropping and adjusting the contrast, to make it stand out more. I also duplicated parts of the leaves in the tree, to make the top of the background a single tone of colour(keeping to the basic theme).

Secondly I wanted to cover up the bottom of the photograph because it was uninteresting, so I used the Spray paint tool in Black  to mask the part I didn’t need.

I then added a them term date and used the rectangle tool to break up the area of black. I thought using the same colour of the font for the lines would give the cover a classic edge.

I wanted to use the same green colour for the main title, but obviosuly it would be to hard to read on the same colour background. So I added a white  rectangle to be used as a background behind the text. To keep within the colour scheme I added black lines to frame the title and then added white text for a subtitle.

Finally I used the Black Spray paint tool to fade the colour of the bottom of the photograph, so it blended with the bottom of the cover.
